Quebec's Legal System
Quebec is the only Canadian province whose private legal system is based on civil law, inherited from the French tradition. The Civil Code of Quebec, which came into force in 1994, governs relations between persons, property and obligations.

Quebec civil law is based on codified principles rather than case law. This means that legal rules are primarily established in legislative texts, unlike the common law which relies more heavily on court decisions.
